Bad Manners

We have new neighbors across the street from us. They are a young couple with two small children. Every morning they let their black lab out and he wanders all over the neighborhood doing his morning business in everyone's yard.  Many times I've had to go out and clean my yard because the odor is very strong.  It's the first thing family and friends smell when they drive up and get out of the car. We haven't said anything to them yet but have returned their dog's business to their front yard. Either they haven't noticed or don't care. I know the next step is to go talk to them which is a chore I dread.  I don't want to seem like a grouchy neighbor but I find this to be very bad manners on their part.  You all know that I like dogs because I own two and I really like their "old" dog but I don't want it doing it's business in my yard.  What would you do?

I'd probably do exactly what you've been doing. Luckily, I'm on a country road and we only get the occasional visit from a dog in the neighborhood. I am always annoyed however when owners do not bother to pick up after their dog when they are walking with them on the trail in the park even though a posted sign specifically directs them to do so. It is indeed very poor manners to allow your dog to behave like that.

I know this is annoying. We had a neighbor's dog who started sleeping in the flowerbeds under the shade trees one summer. Of course this was destroying the flowers. I told my husband about it and he talked to the dog's owner. The dog stopped making the flowers his summer cooling off spot. However, I felt like things were a little strained with the neighbor. They always seemed distant towards us after that. I hate confrontation.

Smiles,
Carol

Good luck. It's almost always a problem when you have to deal with neighbors.

Could you leave them an anonymous note in their mailbox?

Yeah, throwing it back in their yard might help, as dogs go where they sniff previous pooping. Or if you see the dog coming, get out there with the water hose or a spray bottle of vinegar and spray that dog every time he comes near your house, yelling obscenities at the top of your lungs. But, since it doesn't appear that they are sociable neighbors, maybe TOM could mention the problem to them. Would it be to much to get Tom to yell the obscenities? ;)

I was going to suggest what JackDaddy said--Write a note anonymously, mail it if you have too. There also have to be 'rules' about allowing a dog to be off lead unattended--I'd include a copy of that with the note. Good luck!!

As someone once shared with me when I was annoyed that my neighbor plowed his yard straight across the street into mine, "Take him some cookies and explain the situation." I suppose that taking the cookies is supposed to eliminate any hard feelings. Nope. I didn't bake cookies. I wouldn't talk to the neighbor about it; I'd call the town office or the dog catcher. It's not very nice of them to do at all.

Put the pooh in a bag, put it on their front porch, set it on fire, ring the bell and run fast. Good idea?

We had a similar problem with a neighbor dog. We spoke to them and it did no good at all. So they we called the police pound and they came and picked up the dog, several times and finally we moved.
