Never Say Never

This time last year I was still adjusting to having my dad's dog Rowdy living with us and I never thought in a million years I'd have another dog, much less a puppy.  And I have always said that I wouldn't have another puppy because the last puppy we had chewed up everything I held dear. But, alas, I have eaten my words. As they say, never say never.  I have grown to love Rowdy and have gotten quite attached to him and for the last few months have considered getting another dog. I'd talk myself out of it and then get the urge again.  I never mentioned this urge to my husband and sprang it on him only last week.  Lucky for me my husband is a dog lover, although he wouldn't admit it.  Also, he usually agrees to anything I want within reason.

I've had friends make comments like, "Christine, what were you thinking," to "This doesn't sound like the Christine I know," when finding out I have another dog, especially a puppy.  I can't honestly answer those questions. But for whatever posessed me to get another dog I have to live with it now. So far I'm having a good time with it, even though I have had to listen to alot of whinning and crying at night when he's in his crate.  It got so bad last night that I put his crate in our bedroom walk-in closet and shut the door (with a nightlight) and finally ended up on the livingroom sofa to get some sleep.  Hubby is sleeping in another bedroom until Rocky adjust to his crate.  Rocky also had a diet of goat's milk and rice up until now.  He snubs the dry puppy food I bought and hasn't eaten much. Talked to the vet about that this morning and he told me to go buy goat's milk and add it to Science Diet puppy food with a consistancy of oatmeal.  So far he's doing great with the potty training. I know this will take time and I'm patient.  He also follows me everywhere I go so I have to be careful not to step on him.  Right now he's asleep at my feet.  Any helpful hints to raising a puppy would be appreciated.

When I first got Billy, he wouldn't eat anything! I had to go to the pet store and get this tube of high caloric gel, that he licked off my fingers. I think we went through 2-3 tubes, befor he would finally eat something else. For years now I have give him hamburg, mixed vegs, processed very tiny, and rice. In the past year, we started brown rice. He does like his treats though, and some of the semi-moist food once in awhile. Yorkies are sure finiky!

My question is - what does Rowdy think of his new little brother? Our first Yorkie, Elliott, looked at us like he was saying, "There wasn't any need to get me a brother - I was fine being an only child" when we got Smoke. Then when our 3rd Yorkie came on board he appeared to be thinking, "Are you kidding me - a sister? I definitely didn't need one of those!" Now whenever we have any dog visitors he always looks at us saying, "PLEASE tell me they are going home at some point!"

It has been a long time since I had a little puppy, but one thing I've never forgotten and advice I've given many times, and that's what you no doubt know...Have a routine of doing the same thing every time, when you take them out, feed them, put them in the crate etc., and they quickly figure it all out.

As the furmama to 3 dogs, I say you can never have enough pets. You need to get a female to keep those boys in line.

Having gone through raising several puppies, I now go to the SPCA and adopt "teenagers" who are already potty trained and don't whine all night. I will have to say, though, that your new one is ABSOLUTELY DARLING!
